How far before a right turn may you start driving in the bike lane?

The rule

You may drive in a bike lane only to park where allowed, to enter or leave the road, or to turn within 200 feet of the intersection. Check for bicyclists first.

You may move into a bike lane once you're 200 feet or less from your turn. Check your blind spot for bicyclists first. 200 ft: bike lane or center turn lane · 100 ft: start your signal.

From the California Driver Handbook, section 6, page 17. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
