When may you make a U-turn in a residential district?

The rule

On a residential street, a U-turn is allowed when no vehicle is coming toward you within 200 feet.

On residential streets, a U-turn is legal when no vehicles are approaching within 200 feet, unless a sign forbids it. Homes: no car within 200 ft · Business: at intersections only.

From the California Driver Handbook, section 6, page 20. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
