Before changing lanes, what should you do after checking your mirrors?

The rule

Before changing lanes, signal, check your mirrors and the traffic beside and behind you, turn your head to check the blind spot on the side you're moving to, and make sure there's room. You don't need to slow down.

Signal, check your mirrors, then look over your shoulder toward the lane you want. Mirrors don't show your blind spots.

From the California Driver Handbook, section 6, page 15. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
