Practice question · Lanes and turns

Before changing lanes, what should you do after checking your mirrors?

The rule

Before you change lanes or merge, signal, check your mirrors and look over your shoulder, because vehicles can hide in your blind spot.

Check your mirrors, then look over your shoulder to be sure the lane is clear. Mirrors can miss vehicles in your blind spot.

From the Maryland Driver's Manual, Section 7, page 39. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the MVA have the final word.
