While you wait to turn left, which way should your front wheels point?

The rule

While you wait to turn left, keep the front wheels straight until you really begin the turn, so a crash from behind can't push you into oncoming traffic.

Keep your wheels straight while you wait. If a car hits you from behind while your wheels point left, you could be pushed into oncoming traffic.

From the Virginia Driver's Manual, section 3, page 18. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
