What does a diamond symbol painted on a lane mean?
The rule
A diamond symbol marks a lane set aside for buses, car pools and van pools (HOVs), bicycles or other special vehicles. Use it only if your vehicle meets the posted rules while they're in effect. On city streets, where the line beside it is broken, other cars may enter it to turn right at the next corner.
A diamond marks a lane reserved for special vehicles such as buses, car pools and bicycles. Follow the signs for who may use it and when.
From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 33. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
