Practice question · Right of way

A person is crossing the street mid-block, not in a crosswalk. What should you do?

The rule

Pedestrians may step into the road at any time and anywhere, even outside crosswalks. The law says you must take extra care not to hit them.

Expect people to enter the road anywhere, even outside crosswalks. The law requires extra care to avoid hitting them, so slow down or stop if needed.

From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 67. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
