What does this hand signal mean?
The rule
Hand signals use the left hand and arm: pointing straight out for a left turn, pointing upward for a right turn, and pointing downward to slow or stop.
The left arm pointing straight out means a left turn. Pointing upward means a right turn, and pointing downward means slow or stop.
From the Virginia Driver's Manual, section 3, page 18. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
