Practice question · Right of way

What is the safest way to think about the right of way?

The rule

Never count on other drivers to give you the right of way. Even when it's yours, give it up if doing so will help avoid a crash.

The rules say who should go first, but never assume other drivers will follow them. Give up your right of way whenever it helps prevent a collision.

From the California Driver Handbook, section 7, page 39. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
