Right of way is given, not taken
A free practice question for the Massachusetts permit test, with the answer explained.

What is the safest way to think about the right of way?
The rule
Right-of-way rules give you no rights. The right of way is yours to give, never to grab: if another driver breaks the rules, let them go.
The rules say who should go first, but never assume other drivers will follow them. Give up your right of way whenever it helps prevent a crash.
From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 99. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
