What is the safest way to think about the right of way?
The rule
Never assume you have the right-of-way: the rules say who should yield, but you must always look at the situation and avoid a crash.
The rules say who should go first, but never assume other drivers will follow them. Give up your right of way whenever it helps prevent a collision.
From the Maryland Driver's Manual, Section 3, page 13. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the MVA have the final word.
