How fast should you be going when you merge onto an expressway?
The rule
To enter a limited-access highway, signal on the ramp, speed up in the acceleration lane and merge into a safe gap, yielding to highway traffic. Stop in the acceleration lane only if traffic is too heavy to get in.
Get to or near the speed of expressway traffic on the ramp, then merge into a gap big enough for your car.
From the Official Florida Driver License Handbook, page 63. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
