An expressway entrance ramp has no STOP sign, YIELD sign or light. What is the ramp for?
The rule
When no STOP sign, YIELD sign or traffic light controls the entrance ramp, speed up on it to expressway speed, signal, look over your shoulder and blend in. If the entrance lane is too short, stop, wait for a large gap, then speed up quickly.
Use the ramp to get up to expressway speed, signal, look over your shoulder for traffic and blend in. Slow down only if you must to merge safely.
From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 62. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
