When may you stop on the shoulder of an interstate?
The rule
You may not stop in the moving lanes of an interstate or other highway. Stop on the shoulder only if your car breaks down or there is another emergency, with flashers on.
You may not stop in lanes where traffic is moving. The shoulder is only for a disabled vehicle or another emergency.
From the Maryland Driver's Manual, Section 5, page 32. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the MVA have the final word.
