Can you be charged with DUI for driving after taking a legal prescription drug?

The rule

Almost any drug, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, can make you a less safe driver. If a drug impairs your driving, you can face the same penalties as for alcohol. Read the label, and ask a pharmacist or doctor if unsure.

If any drug, including one a doctor prescribed, impairs your driving, you can face the same penalties as for driving under the influence of alcohol.

From the Virginia Driver's Manual, section 3, page 25. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
