How far back from the car ahead should you stay?
The rule
Keep at least four seconds behind the vehicle ahead in good weather and traffic, and more in rain, low light or heavy traffic: count from when it passes a fixed marker.
Florida's handbook teaches a following distance of at least four seconds in good conditions, and more in rain, low light or heavy traffic.
From the Official Florida Driver License Handbook, page 61. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
