How far back from the car ahead should you stay?
The rule
When the vehicle ahead passes a fixed point, count one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two. If you reach the point before you finish, you're following too closely. Leave more room in bad weather, work zones, heavy traffic and always at night.
Use the two-second count. When the car ahead passes a fixed point, you should not reach it before you finish counting two.
From the Georgia Drivers' Manual, page 40. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DDS have the final word.
