How far back from the car ahead should you stay?
The rule
Use the three-second rule: when the vehicle ahead passes a fixed object, count three seconds; if you reach the object first, you're too close. Three seconds is the minimum for good roads and moderate traffic.
Use the three-second rule. It gives you time to react if the driver ahead brakes suddenly or makes a mistake.
From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 43. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
