What do rectangular signs that are taller than they are wide usually give?
The rule
Rectangular signs taller than they are wide usually give rules of the road; wide ones usually give directions or information.
Tall rectangular signs usually tell you the rules of the road, such as a speed limit. You must obey them.
From the Maryland Driver's Manual, Section 4, page 20. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the MVA have the final word.
