What does a white rectangular sign usually tell you?

The rule

Regulatory signs, with a white or red background, tell you a traffic law you must obey; the plain rectangle is the shape for rules.

White rectangular signs show rules, such as which way traffic flows or where you may not park. You must obey them.

From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 86. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
