What is this sign warning you about?

The rule

A Right Lane Ends sign warns that a lane is ending and the road narrows. Drivers in that lane must merge into the next lane when there is a safe gap.

A Lane Ends sign means one lane is about to end. If you are in it, signal and merge into the next lane when there is a safe gap.

From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 84. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
