At a STOP sign with a stop line, where should you stop?

The rule

At a STOP sign, stop before a stop line or crosswalk painted on the road. With no lines, stop close to the intersection where you can see traffic both ways, without entering it.

At a STOP sign, the stop line shows where to stop. Stop behind it, not in the crosswalk or the intersection.

From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 86. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
