At a STOP sign with a stop line, where must you stop?
The rule
At a STOP sign, stop before the stop line. With no stop line, stop before the crosswalk. With neither, stop before the intersection at the point closest to it where you can see cross traffic.
When there is a stop line, stop before it. Use the crosswalk only when there is no stop line, and the intersection only when there is neither.
From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 29. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
