A tow truck with flashing amber lights is stopped on the shoulder of a two-lane country road. What must you do?
The rule
For an emergency or hazard vehicle stopped with its emergency lights, amber lights, or amber and blue lights on, slow down on every road. On parkways, interstates and other multi-lane controlled-access roads, also leave the lane next to it unless that isn't safe. The same goes for any vehicle stopped on the shoulder of a parkway or other controlled-access highway.
New York's Move Over law says slow down on every road for a stopped emergency or hazard vehicle with its lights on. On multi-lane parkways and interstates, also move out of the next lane if it's safe.
From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 35. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
