How far before a turn should you start signaling?
The rule
Signal three or four seconds, about 100 feet, before you turn. Signaling is required by law, so do it even when no one else is on the road.
Turn your signal on three or four seconds, about 100 feet, ahead of a turn, so drivers, bike riders and pedestrians know what you plan to do.
From the Virginia Driver's Manual, section 3, page 18. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
