An ambulance with its siren on passes you. What's the closest you may follow it?
The rule
It's illegal to follow a fire engine, police car, ambulance, or other emergency vehicle within 300 feet when its siren or flashing lights are on.
Stay at least 300 feet behind a fire truck, police car, or ambulance when its siren or flashing lights are on. Closer is against the law.
From the California Driver Handbook, section 7, page 45. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
