A fire truck answering an emergency call passes you. What's the closest you may follow it?

The rule

Florida law bans following a fire truck on its way to an emergency any closer than 500 feet.

Stay at least 500 feet behind a fire truck on its way to an emergency. Closer is against the law.

From the Official Florida Driver License Handbook, page 62. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
