An ambulance with its siren on passes you. What's the closest you may follow it?

The rule

Following within 300 feet of a fire engine, ambulance, police car or other emergency vehicle that is answering an alarm is against the law.

Stay at least 300 feet behind a fire truck, police car or ambulance answering an alarm with its siren or lights on. Closer is against the law.

From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 120. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
