Within how many feet of a car you are following must you dim your high beams?

The rule

Switch to low beams when you are following a vehicle 300 feet or less ahead of you.

Once you are 300 feet or closer behind a vehicle going your way, switch to low beams.

From the Maryland Driver's Manual, Section 5, page 27. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the MVA have the final word.
