Within how many feet of a vehicle ahead of you must you use low beams?

The rule

Use low beams when you are within 200 feet of a vehicle ahead of you, even one in another lane.

Dim to low beams within 200 feet of a vehicle you are following, so your lights don't blind its driver. Oncoming vehicles need 500 feet.

From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 63. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
