Within how many feet of a car you are following must you dim your high beams?

The rule

When you follow another vehicle, use low beams whenever you are 200 feet or closer behind it.

Once you are within 200 feet of a vehicle ahead of you going your way, switch to low beams.

From the Virginia Driver's Manual, section 3, page 23. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
