Where may an open alcoholic drink be inside your car while you drive?

The rule

You may not drink alcohol while driving or have an open alcoholic drink anywhere inside the vehicle, even if a passenger holds it. The fine is $100 to $500; drivers under 21 are also arrested and suspended.

No open alcoholic drink may be anywhere inside your vehicle while you drive, even in someone else's hand.

From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 74. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
