On a highway, how far before your exit ramp should you signal?

The rule

On a highway, turn your signal on 500 feet or more before a turn, and 500 feet or more before the exit ramp.

On a highway, your exit signal goes on 500 feet or more before the ramp, so drivers behind you have time to react.

From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 95. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
