The rule

Keep at least 20 feet between your car and a crosswalk at an intersection. Hydrants need 15 feet; traffic lights, STOP signs and YIELD signs need 30.
From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 43. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
