You're parking on a hill with no curb. Which way should you turn your front wheels?
The rule
On a hill with no curb, whether you face uphill or downhill, turn your wheels to the right, toward the edge of the road, so a rolling car would move away from the middle of the road if the brakes failed.
No curb, uphill or downhill: turn your wheels to the right. If the car rolls, it goes off the road, away from traffic. With a curb: downhill toward it, uphill away.
From the California Driver Handbook, section 6, page 27. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
