What does the fundamental speed law require?
The rule
The fundamental speed law: never drive faster than is safe. Your speed must fit the traffic, the road, the weather and how far you can see, and the people walking or biking, even when the posted limit is higher.
The fundamental speed law says your speed must be safe for what is happening now. Traffic, weather, the road surface and people walking or biking can make a safe speed lower than the sign.
From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 79. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
