A person starts across in front of you while your light is red. Then it turns green. What must you do?
The rule
Before you turn, yield to pedestrians in the crosswalks to your left or right. If someone steps into the crosswalk before your light turns green, wait for them to cross.
If a pedestrian enters the crosswalk and then your light turns green, wait for them to finish. Before turning, yield to people in the crosswalks to your left and right.
From the New York State Driver's Manual, page 34. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
