Practice question · Sharing the road

At a railroad crossing, the gate is rising but hasn't finished. May you drive under it?

The rule

Stop when a crossing's lights start to flash, before the gate comes down. Driving around or under a crossing gate is against the law while it is down or still opening or closing.

Driving around or under a crossing gate is illegal while it's down or while it's being opened or closed. Wait until it's all the way up.

From the Official Florida Driver License Handbook, page 56. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the DMV have the final word.
