At a railroad crossing, the gate goes up but the red lights are still flashing. What should you do?
The rule
At a railroad crossing, stay stopped until the gate rises and the lights stop flashing. Never drive around a lowered gate or past flashing lights, even if you see no train.
Flashing red lights at a crossing mean stop and wait. Don't cross until the lights stop flashing, even if the gate goes up. Another train could be coming.
From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 87. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
