Practice question · Sharing the road

At a railroad crossing, the gate goes up but the lights are still flashing. What should you do?

The rule

When railroad gates are down or warning lights flash, the road is closed: stop and wait for the gates to rise and the lights to stop. After a train passes, another may be coming.

Stop and wait while gates are down or lights flash. Cross only after the gates are up and the lights have stopped flashing.

From the Maryland Driver's Manual, Section 5, page 30. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the MVA have the final word.
