When you pass a bicyclist or another vulnerable road user, what is the least space you must leave?

The rule

When you pass a vulnerable road user, such as a bicyclist, pedestrian or roadside worker, leave at least 4 feet. If it's safe you may use part of the next lane or cross the center line, but obey the speed limit.

Give a bicyclist or other vulnerable road user at least 4 feet when you pass. If you can't, stay behind until you can.

From the Massachusetts Driver's Manual, page 49. This question is our own wording of that rule. The handbook and the RMV have the final word.
